7th Grade Math

Course Description

7th grade mathematics is designed to expand the student's mathematical ability and skills in solving problems.   Seventh grade students extend their study of ratios and rates to develop an understanding of proportionality and an informal definition of slope.  Students develop a holistic understanding of numbers as they utilize multiple representations of rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) interpret negative numbers in everyday contexts, and write expressions and equations in one variable to solve problems. Students build on their knowledge of geometric formulas to solve problems involving scale drawing and informal geometric constructions, determine the circumference and area of a circle and calculate the surface area and volume of various polygons.  They solve problems involving angles formed by intersecting lines, and they examine cross-section of tree-dimensional figures.  Students continue their study of statistical thinking by exploring the concept of random sampling.  By comparing two data distributions, students begin to understand the importance of representative samples for drawing valid inferences.
